“Come sit with me”

My grandson isn’t talking yet, but he’s developed a supply of non-verbal methods of communication to make his wishes known. This past week, as I worked in the kitchen, he tapped me on the leg to get my attention. Showing me a book he’d selected, he pointed toward the living room. I followed and he patted the seat he’d selected for me as if to say, “Come sit with me.”

I smiled as I sat on the beanbag chair he chose. He grunted and huffed as he maneuvered another chair into position and plopped down across from me. He grinned his approval and began looking at his book.

Without saying a word, he accomplished his goal of having me sit with him. He’d sought my attention and used the skills he had to bring me to his side.

Come sit with me

How often does our Lord call us to sit with Him–to take time to join Him in meditation, prayer, or reading scripture?

How do we respond to His call? Do we eagerly join Him or make excuses?

“I’m too tired.

If we’re exhausted and overworked, do we make the excuse we’re too tired? Yet Jesus reminds us we can find rest with Him.

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11:28-29)

“I’m too busy.

Life is busy. Many times we’re overwhelmed with responsibilities. We may feel we don’t have time to “sit with God,” but Jesus reminds us how important it is to take time to be with Him. His words to Martha, when she complained of being too busy, urge us not to let our hectic schedule stop us from God time.

“Martha. Martha,” The Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few are needed–or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)

I don’t believe God cares whether I spend time with Him or not.

When we assert that God doesn’t care whether we spend time with Him, we’re putting ourselves down. Our Father loves us with an infinite love beyond our comprehension. Who among us would give their child over to death–a horrible death on the cross, to save someone else? Our Father thinks each of us is unique and special.

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1 John 4:10)

Our Father loves us. Jesus loves us.

How do you respond when our Lord calls, “Come sit with me?”

I pray we can find time to sit with Him–praise and worship Him–read and meditate on his Word–and show our love for Him through loving and serving others.

  11. “Come sit with me.” What a gentle invitation – no pressure, no requirements, That is our open invitation from Jesus.

Your anecdote perfectly describes a toddler communicating his wishes and made me smile as I remembered my own precious grandchildren at this stage.

    1. Katherine Pasour says:

Candyce, our grandchildren grow up so fast (too fast), don’t they? But they are such a gift of love. I’m blessed that mine live close by. You are right about the gentle invitation–our Lord never forces us, but asks, “Come to me.” Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Wishing you sunshine and blessings.

  12. Jeannie Waters says:

What an important reminder you share here, Katherine. I enjoy a morning quiet time, but I need to spend more time listening to the Father as I read His Word and pray. Thank you for this precious truth the story of your grandson illustrated.

    1. Katherine Pasour says:

Thank you for your encouragement, Jeannie. I also need more quiet time in His Word and listening to His guidance. Sometimes my schedule is overloaded, but I need to remember what’s most important. Wishing you joy and blessings!

  13. JD Wininger says:

So many lessons we can take from this, and from your young grandson Ms. Katherine. As I was listening to you share this story on PJNET.tv last evening, I thought about the book and how God sometimes has to remind me of how important it is to sit with Him and reason with Him as I read His Word. I can’t wait in a few years to read of how he’s asking you for, “… just one more Bible story memaw.” 🙂 Thank you for sharing this blessing with us today, and for the reminder to come sit with Him from time to time each day.

    1. Katherine Pasour says:

I know you’ve mentored many young folks during your lifetime, J.D., you’re such a wonderful role model and encourager. I’m thankful for your hours spent with AWANA children and those young people you’ve guided on the ranch. And another wonderful blessing we receive from those hours with young folks? They teach us old folks some lessons, too. I think it is possible to teach “old dogs new tricks” if we (the old dogs) are willing to learn. Throughout my teaching career I learned from my students. As a parent and grandparent, I’m still gathering knowledge. I pray that we old folks can keep learning the lessons God sends us in a variety of ways and use that precious knowledge to better serve Him. Thank you for your service to our Father and His children, dear friend.

  14. I love that God wants and desires to spend time with us. Such a beautiful post.

    1. Katherine Pasour says:

I love that, too, Jen. Isn’t it amazing that God loves each of with His infinite capacity to love and wants a relationship with all of us? Too much for my feeble brain to comprehend! Wishing you a great week.

  15. Such a beautiful reminder your grandson brought to us all. “Come sit with me.” Indeed. May we spend time with our grandchildren and in so doing, convey how deeply we love them. And may we convey our love to our Father as we sit quietly in His Presence. children can bring us the sweetest lessons! Blessings!

    1. Katherine Pasour says:

I’m so thankful for the gift of love–our Father’s love for us and our ability to give and receive love to and from family, friends, our church community, and those fellow authors who support us from great distances. And the gift of love through grandchildren is near the top of the list! Wishing you a week filled with joy and blessings, Joanne.
