Maisie Discovers Her Fingerprint

This week, I’m delighted to have Sandra Kay Chambers as my guest. She’s written a wonderful children’s book about Maisie (a sweet Frenchie bulldog) that I know your children and grandchildren will enjoy. Maisie Discovers Her Fingerprint will be a great Christmas gift for those special little ones in your life.

Here’s Sandra!

Maisie Discovers Her Fingerprint

By Sandra Kay Chambers

As Christian parents and grandparents, we desire that our children and grandchildren grow up knowing that the God of the universe handcrafted each of them to be unique, one-of-kind, with unique gifts and talents to serve Him and others. Unfortunately, we no longer live in a society that holds to a biblical worldview, and as a result, there is a crisis of hurting kids struggling to know who they are and what their purpose in life is.

Psalm 78:4 (NLT) tells us to teach God’s truth to our children: We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders.”

Our children are special to God

When I wrote my kid’s devotional, Fingerprint Devotions: 40 Devotions to Help You Realize You Are a Kid Uniquely Created by God for a Purpose (ages 8-12, ©2023 Ambassador International) my goal was to help children come to know God and grow in Him with age-appropriate devotions on topics relatable to kids. It was important to me that they realize how unique and special they are to God. The book uses scientific facts about fingerprints to help kids understand God’s creation and His love for them.

A year later, my first children’s picture book, Maisie Discovers Her Fingerprint, was published. It has the same theme of fingerprints that my devotional has, except it’s for younger children (ages 3-8).

Maisie Discovers Her Fingerprints

This picture book is about an adorable French bulldog who just wants to feel special. Because Frenchies can’t swim well, Maisie can’t swim with her doggy friends and she never gets invited to doggy sleepovers because she snores so loudly! When she finds out that humans have unique fingerprints, she goes on a search to see if she has special fingerprints too so she can feel special and accepted.

Maisie visits her animal friends at the zoo and discovers that they have unique fingerprints like humans, but they tell her she doesn’t—she only has paws. Children will identify with Maisie’s need to feel special and be excited when she discovers that she does have a unique fingerprint—it’s just not on her paws! This book will help kids realize they are unique and special because God created them (and Maisie) with their own unique fingerprint that no one else on earth has. At the back of the book, there are 10 fun Fingerprint Facts. On my website, I also have a free downloadable activity packet to go with the book. (https://sandrakaychambers.com.)

Maisie is my grand puppy

The story behind this picture book is really fun. Maisie, the main character in the book, is actually my real-life grand puppy. I decided to write a picture book about her just for fun for our family, and they loved it. They said, “Oh, you’ve got to publish it.” I queried my publisher and they agreed. I loved working with the illustrator on this book because I provided input on the cover art and the illustrations. The illustrator did an awesome job designing Maisie in the book to look like our Maisie.

I believe Christian children’s authors have a very important ministry in reaching kids about God’s love early in their life. Children’s books also provide a great opportunity for bonding as a family over reading and offer great starting points for discussions about God and life.
