What will we do in Heaven?
This message is the fifth and final of my blog series focusing on Heaven. During my husband’s long illness we spoke often of “serious” subjects, one being Heaven. These discussions led to this series–as I researched other viewpoints on Heaven and added my own thoughts. As always, I welcome your feedback.
One question my husband asked me, “What do you think we’ll do in Heaven?”
The answers I found brought comfort to us both.
We will be with our Father and Jesus for eternity!
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down for the words are trustworthy and true.” He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. Revelations 21:5-7
We will celebrate with Jesus!
Jesus told His disciples: “I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until the day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom. Matthew 26:29
We will praise our Father and Lord!
But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly. Hebrews 12:22
We will use our gifts in service to God!
David Burns* suggests that we will have an opportunity to use the gifts bestowed upon us by God in service to Him in Heaven to help run the Universe. Isn’t that an awesome thought? What an honor and privilege it will be to be able to continue to serve our Lord in His heavenly dwelling place.
Of course we know we all have gifts–in spite of our desire to be humble about our abilities.
We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance to your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Romans 12:6-8
We fit into these categories (and others) and have so much to offer. How amazing that we might be able to continue to share our gifts in Heaven!
One more thing…
The most important thing…
To be in Heaven after we leave this Earth, we must accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. If we believe that our Lord died for us, took our sins upon Himself so that we might have eternal life with Him, and accept Him into our heart as our Savior–then we will be with Him in Heaven.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
I’m looking forward to seeing you in Heaven one day, my friends. Until then, may the Lord bless you and keep you safe.
*David Burns, “Heaven Is a Wonderful Place,” February 25, 1996 Sermon. Quoted in biblestudytools.com post, April 19, 2020.
Until that day my friend. I will keep moving forward in this journey of sanctification, waiting to be perfected upon Christ’s upward call. Whether that’s working alongside you as a scribe in heaven’s halls or tending the crops or livestock alongside “Farmer Bob”, it will be a joyous occasion indeed Ms. Katherine. God’s blessings ma’am; and thank you so much for this wonderful series. I pray it has touched many lives and brought God’s peace to many more.
Aren’t we blessed that our Lord is patient with us on our journey of sanctification? I picture Him looking down at me, shaking His head, and saying, “Try again, my child–you just don’t have it quite right yet.” Thank you for your beautiful word picture, J.D. I feel like we farmers and ranchers will most definitely be doing something of service “outside” (whatever that looks like in Heaven). Wishing you continued good health and blessings, my friend.
