2018 Wellness Challenge 2–Eat more fruits and vegetables!
Last week I challenged you to drink more water–in fact, to choose only water for your beverage for two weeks. If you accepted my challenge, I hope and pray that you’re already feeling better!
What’s the challenge for this week?
Eat more fruits and vegetables!
Below is the link to a previous blog that describes the many benefits of eating fruits and vegetables. You can go there for more details on the value of eating five or more servings of these “wonder” foods. Yesterday morning on the Today Show, Dr. Oz discussed five habits we can develop to be healthier and live longer. One of these is EAT MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES! His recommendation is to plan the meal around the vegetables (make veggies the focus of the meal) rather than meat.
So my challenge for you this week?
First, count your servings of fruits and vegetables for three days. A serving is:
- A medium sized piece of fruit (such as banana, apple, orange, etc.)
- One-half cup of cooked veggies or chopped fruit
- One to two cups of leafy greens (lettuce, kale, spinach, etc.)
- Or, as Dr. Oz would say, a serving is “the size of your fist”
Then…if you’re not already eating five or more servings each day, add (gradually over a week’s time)) until you are getting five or more servings of these awesome foods (fresh fruits and vegetables prepared in a healthy way).
Prepared in a healthy way means:
- Not fried (sorry, french fries are not healthy)
- Limited sugar (apple pie is awesome, but the plain apple is much better for us)
- Limited dressings on our salads (olive oil and vinegar rather than dressings high in fat)
- Being careful of extra additives (sour cream, butter, cheese, sugar, etc.)
I hope you’ll be inspired to add more fruits and veggies. Please let me know how I can pray for you to be healthier in 2018.
Wishing you continued blessings, my friends.
