Move more? How can we do that?

Regular physical activity is an important aspect of a healthy lifestyle. The benefits are extensive (see what the “experts” say here). Move more? But how can we do that with a busy schedule and limited time?

Move more

Whether working full time with a young family to care for or retired and involved in a long list of volunteer activities, most of us are busy. It’s recommended that we exercise four to six times per week for 30 to 60 minutes each session. Although it’s ideal to reserve a block of time dedicated just to exercise, that’s often a challenge. So how can we move more?

Look for ways to add small increments of activity into your day.

Some possibilities to move more:
  • When possible (and safe to do so) walk or cycle to your destination.
  • When a car is necessary, park further away from your destination to add some exercise.
  • Take the stairs rather than an elevator (or walk up the escalator).
  • If working in a sedentary job, take a short walking break often. If in an office or business location, take the longer walk to a coworkers office or the restroom to add more steps.
  • When watching television or working on the computer, take frequent breaks for a walk and stretch break (this not only helps your heart, but also your back, neck, and eyes). You can place some light weights or a resistance band near your favorite television spot to remind you to exercise during commercials.
  • Set a timer or notification on your phone for exercise break reminders.
  • Find a buddy who will walk with you four to six days a week. If the weather is too bad for outside walking, you can meet at a church, mall, or large store to walk.

Movement is just as important for our health as eating. We usually find time to eat on a daily basis. If physical activity is a priority, we will schedule it into our day.

What’s holding you back from moving more? Do you need an exercise buddy? Would suggestions for appropriate exercises for you age group be of benefit? Please let me know if I can help.

Wishing you a blessed day!

Thank you for stopping by, Diana, and giving me the gift of encouragement. I’m hoping you have good weather and an opportunity to walk as Spring keeps tempting us with warmer temperatures (between bouts of cold). Blessings!

I definitely feel better when I’m following a regular exercise plan, and it’s much easier to keep moving than to get started after a period of inactivity.

You are absolutely right, Terri. If we can establish a regular physical activity program, the exercise habit is so much easier to maintain than if we start and stop. Hope your week is filled with sunshine and joy.
